There are many opportunities for volunteers to assist in the restoration, maintenance and administration of the Trust's assets.

The aim of the Trust is to restore the grounds, buildings and engines of the Victorian pumping station at Crossness and to create an exhibition of sanitation history.

Volunteers currently work three days each week, Tuesdays Fridays and Sundays, between 9am and 4pm although the days and hours are for guidance only. 

Public steaming days, educational visits, filming and corporate events take place throughout our busy annual calendar which would also provide management and stewarding opportunities for the volunteers.

We currently have the following unfilled vacancies: 

Catering Manager

To manage a small cafeteria which provides catering for occasional public and corporate events, and to assist, from time to time, with smaller events.         A food hygiene certificate would be an advantage.

Position to include the following types of activity:

Ordering / purchasing foodstuffs and consumables. Managing a small team of catering assistants. Preparing and serving food, drinks and light refreshments in the cafeteria. Washing up. Cleaning food preparation areas. Meeting the public.


Do you have green fingers? Help to develop and maintain the formal gardens at the Crossness Engines Trust. Volunteer gardeners are needed to carry out planting, weeding, pruning, grass cutting, watering and general tidying.

Tour Guide

Volunteer tour guides are needed to show groups of visitors around the site and explain its historical significance. Volunteers will engage with visitors, speaking to both individuals and small groups, occasionally wearing Victorian period costume

Museum Cleaner

A volunteer is needed to help keep all public areas of the museum clean. Volunteers will clean exhibition areas, public facilities and ornamental painted ironwork.


Will help to maintain and landscape all outside areas except the formal gardens in order to restore the grounds to their original Victorian appearance as far as possible.


The position will be to help to restore disassembled parts of beam engines and other artefacts. Duties will include the cleaning of engine parts using machines and benchwork, painting and labouring.


A volunteer stonemason is needed by the Trust to restore ornamental stone and brickwork.


Required to undertake general electrical tasks and the installation, design and testing of equipment and systems.

Skills and qualifications:  Current installation and PAT testing certificates. A knowledge of industrial systems would be an advantage.
