About this project
Prince Consort is the restored beam engine at the centre of Crossness. Volunteers maintain the engine and care for the Grade I listed building around it. Beside it stand Victoria (in restoration), Albert Edward and Alexandra (largely as left mid-century).
Originally single-cylinder engines from James Watt & Co., all four were upgraded to triple expansion around 1895–1901. By the 1930s other plant did most of the pumping; abandonment and then rescue shaped what you walk into today.
