Stand in the Cathedral of Sewage with a guide and hear why Crossness was built.
Why take a guided tour?
One of our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides takes you into the awe-inspiring Beam Engine House and further around the site. They will tell you the fascinating story of why Crossness was built and how it worked, serving London for more than 80 years. You’ll find out about its incredible royal opening ceremony, the people who lived on site, how it was abandoned and then rescued to become the museum it is today.
Tours include a short film setting the scene, a fun talk with a model of Bazalgette’s system followed by the tour.
You can purchase drinks and snacks at the Ness Cafe on site and our gift shop will be open.

Take our volunteer-run narrow-gauge RANG Railway (opens in a new tab) from the visitor entrance to the museum.
Tours run fortnightly on Tuesdays at 11:30am and selected Sundays at 12pm and last around 2 1/2 hours.

Getting here
There is no free shuttle bus on Guided Tour days. Drive or take a taxi from Abbey Wood Station to the visitor car park. The walk from the station is about 45 minutes. See Getting Here for more.
We don’t recommend using local buses to reach us from the station. They don’t drop you close enough to make it worthwhile.
