Teacher checklist
- Age suitability: primary, secondary and SEND groups welcomed, activities tailored by age.
- Curriculum links: history, geography, science, maths, engineering and public health.
- Group size: up to two classes per day; £100 per class.
- Visit format: exclusive use of the site; engine tour; hands-on activities; exhibition trails; indoor lunch space.

Risk assessment summary
Crossness is a Grade I historic industrial site. Teachers remain responsible for their group. Key points for planning:
- Supervision: school staff remain responsible for supervision. Crossness volunteers lead and support the activities.
- Site character: uneven historic floors, outdoor paths (tarmac/gravel), steps and walkways in the Beam Engine House; some areas have pierced flooring.
- Stairs: upper galleries and some views require steep or narrow stairs; ground-level routes cover much of the visit when planned in advance.
- Machinery: engines and historic machinery are demonstrated under volunteer control; pupils stay in designated areas and follow staff instructions.
- Weather: some movement outdoors between buildings; indoor lunch space is available on school visit days.
- First aid and welfare: toilets near exhibition areas; report any incident to site staff immediately.
- Fire and emergency: follow Crossness staff directions; assembly points are briefed on arrival.
- Food and medical needs: pupils usually bring packed lunches. Tell us about allergies, medical needs or other support requirements when booking.
