Getting Here

We are located in Thamesmead, south-east London, close to major roads and rail links.

Most visitors head to our visitor car park on Bazalgette Way and use our pedestrian entrance to reach us.

Closest station: Abbey Wood.

On Steaming Days and most special events, a free vintage bus runs from Abbey Wood station. Check your visit type below for the right arrival.

We don’t recommend using local buses to reach us from the station.

Travel information by visit type:

RANG Railway

On open days the volunteer-built RANG (Royal Arsenal Narrow Gauge) Railway is part of the visit. It takes you the short ride from the public entrance towards the Beam Engine House.

Unfortunately, as of August 2026, it is undergoing urgent repairs. We hope to run again by October. Until then, on Steaming Days and special events the vintage bus will take you to the museum door, or it is a short walk from the car park.

FAQs

Quick answers before you book.

Are you open every day?

No, only on selected dates. Use the calendar to see what’s on and book.

What’s the difference between a Steaming Day and a guided tour?

A Steaming Day is our big public opening: Prince Consort is scheduled to run under steam, the Beam Engine House is yours to wander and volunteers are on hand. A guided tour is a smaller booked visit with a volunteer: a short film, a fun model talk, then a walk through the site. Prince Consort does not steam on tour days.

Do I need to book in advance?

Our events often sell out, so we recommend booking a ticket online in advance. To check availability, see our calendar.

Does the free shuttle bus run on every event?

The free vintage bus runs from Abbey Wood station on Steaming Days and special events. It does not run for Guided Tours. Check the event page and see Getting Here.

Is Crossness suitable for children?

Yes. Families are very welcome. Try a Steaming Day or a special event for a lively day out, or book a school visit if you’re coming with a class. Under 5s go free on Steaming Days.

How accessible is the site?

Crossness is a historic industrial site. Some areas have stairs or uneven surfaces. See Accessibility for parking, routes and Blue Badge arrangements.

Is there a café?

Yes, the Ness Café is open on open days, special events and guided tours.

Is there a free guide I can use on my phone?

Yes. Download our free digital guide on Bloomberg Connects for stories and history you can use before and during your visit. Get the app (opens in a new tab).
