How to Travel
On Steaming Days and most special events we run a free vintage bus from Abbey Wood station. The bus is not available for other types of visit.

Abbey Wood is the closest station (Elizabeth Line, Southeastern and Thameslink).
- Steaming Days and most special events: hop on the free vintage bus from Abbey Wood. For more information on the shuttle bus for your event see Bus Times.
- Guided Tours, educational, private and photography visits: there is no shuttle bus available. It is about a 40–45 minute walk, or a short taxi to the visitor car park.
The bus to use is our free vintage service from Abbey Wood station. It runs on Steaming Days and most special events from Bus Stop C next to the main concourse at Abbey Wood Station.
To check the timetable or whether it is running for your event, please see the Bus Times page. We do not recommend using local buses from Abbey Wood Station. The drop off can look close on a map, but then leave you with no clear walk in. We would skip them.
Park in the visitor car park on Bazalgette Way, then walk in through the pedestrian entrance. Taxis can use What3words charmingly.cure.tone (opens in a new tab).
- This is the usual arrival if you are driving to a Steaming Day, a special event or a Guided Tour.
- Booked groups often use this car park too. Sometimes we ask you to drive on site instead, and we will say so when we confirm your visit.
- If a taxi is bringing a booked group, send the driver the directions your museum contact gave you.
From Abbey Wood it is about a 40–45 minute walk.

- You can take the Thames Path, but it is quite a long way on foot. The Thames Path gate (opens in a new tab) is open on Steaming Days, special events and performances. At other times, please ask us first.
- Private tours and photography visits: check the route with your museum contact.
We are within cycling distance of Woolwich, with Uber Boat, DLR and Elizabeth Line connections. The Thames Path is a pleasant ride along the river.
There is secure cycle parking on site, by the large pond next to the Thames Path.

Blue Badge bays sit beside the pedestrian gate in the visitor car park on Bazalgette Way. From there, a handrail path leads towards the railway when it is running.
