Volunteers keep Crossness ticking
Join a group of around 100 regular volunteers, helping on event days, restoring engines, running our RANG railway or working behind the scenes. There’s always plenty to do, lots to learn and people to meet, all inside one of the most fabulous buildings you’ll ever set foot in.
You do not need to be an engineer to start. Enthusiasm and reliability matter. Training is offered for many roles.

Available positions
Trustee
We have vacancies to join the Board of Trustees. We are looking for particular experience in fundraising and health and safety. Suitable for those with the experience and availability to attend bi-monthly board meetings.
Gardeners
If you are interested in gardening, come and help to develop and maintain the grounds at Crossness.
Guide / Front of House
Help on advertised open days, special events and tours throughout the year. We need guides to show visitors around and front-of-house volunteers to welcome people and help the day run smoothly.
Steam Team
Looking for people who have experience, or want to be trained, in maintaining and running Prince Consort and related plant.
Railway Volunteer
Help maintain the Royal Arsenal Narrow Gauge (RANG) railway which transports visitors to the main site on open days.
Restorer
A wide variety of restoration jobs: from disassembled parts of beam engines and other artefacts to on-site building and metalwork.
Events Coordinator
Oversee aspects of event planning and management including supervision of our events team. Suitable for people with event experience.
Electrician
General electrical tasks and installation, design and testing of equipment and systems. Skills and qualifications required.
